ECOPILOT Launches to Advance Sustainable Furniture and Mattress Design

The ECOPILOT project has officially begun, launching a new European research and innovation effort to make sustainability assessment more accessible, practical and useful for the furniture and mattress sectors.

Funded under Horizon Europe, ECOPILOT brings together expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), artificial intelligence, sustainable materials, digital technologies, industrial production and stakeholder engagement. Over its 36-month duration, the project will develop new tools, datasets and methodologies designed to help companies make better-informed sustainability decisions from the earliest stages of product development.

At the centre of this work is an ambitious goal: to transform complex sustainability assessment into a process that can be more easily understood and applied by SMEs, designers, innovators and other industry actors.

Why is ECOPILOT needed?

Life Cycle Assessment is an important methodology for evaluating the environmental impacts associated with products, materials and processes throughout their life cycle.

However, applying LCA can still be challenging, particularly for smaller companies and organisations without dedicated sustainability expertise. Limited data, specialised methodologies, complex software and the resources required to conduct detailed assessments can all create barriers to wider adoption.

These challenges become even more significant when companies work with new or emerging materials, where reliable life-cycle data may not yet exist.

The furniture and mattress industries provide an important context for addressing these issues. Both sectors face increasing expectations around circularity, product sustainability, material safety, recycling and the substitution of substances of concern.

ECOPILOT responds to this challenge by combining digital innovation with established sustainability assessment methodologies.

Introducing the Conversational PEF Copilot

The project’s central innovation will be a Conversational Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) Copilot developed specifically for furniture and mattress products.

Instead of requiring users to navigate several highly specialised tools independently, ECOPILOT will provide a guided environment where users can interact with the system through conversational and structured workflows.

The Copilot will bring together different analytical capabilities for environmental impact assessment, circularity, data gaps, uncertainty and sustainability compliance, helping users move from product information to meaningful assessment results.

An important objective is to make this process useful even for people who are not LCA specialists. The project plans to develop a sector-specific system that can guide furniture designers and SMEs through preliminary cradle-to-grave assessments while maintaining alignment with the Product Environmental Footprint methodology.

In this way, ECOPILOT aims to bridge the gap between complex sustainability science and everyday design decisions.

From data gaps to better sustainability decisions

The ECOPILOT project will address several interconnected challenges throughout its implementation.

One priority is the development of PEF-aligned and FAIR Life Cycle Inventory datasets for emerging alternatives to substances of concern. These will support the assessment of materials relevant to furniture and mattresses, including alternatives used in coatings, adhesives, textiles and foams.

The project will also advance sustainability assessment through predictive and prospective methods. Its work will explore areas such as predictive modelling, dynamic LCA, circularity scenarios, Planetary Boundaries and uncertainty analysis, with these capabilities ultimately integrated into the Conversational PEF Copilot.

Another key goal is interoperability. ECOPILOT’s tools and datasets are being designed to connect with wider European sustainability infrastructures and initiatives, supporting the exchange and reuse of sustainability information across different systems.

The project will also look beyond environmental performance alone. Social Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing will be incorporated to support a broader understanding of sustainability that considers environmental, social and economic dimensions together.

Supporting safer and more sustainable furniture and mattresses

ECOPILOT will validate its approach through applications in the furniture and mattress sectors.

Particular attention will be given to materials and substances used in products, including coatings for wood and metal components, furniture adhesives, and flame retardants for textiles and foams. These areas combine the need for safer material alternatives with opportunities to improve product circularity and environmental performance.

By project completion, ECOPILOT aims to reach Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL6), demonstrating that the project’s scientific and technological developments can operate effectively under relevant conditions.

This real-world focus is essential to the project’s approach. ECOPILOT is not intended simply to produce new methodologies, but to develop solutions that can ultimately support practical eco-design and substitution decisions within industry.

A European consortium begins its collaboration in Athens

The ECOPILOT consortium officially came together for its Kick-Off Meeting on 2 July 2026 in Athens, Greece, hosted by R-Nano, representing the project coordinator.

The meeting brought partners together to establish a shared understanding of ECOPILOT’s objectives, implementation approach and priorities for the coming months.

Discussions covered the different technical and methodological areas of the project, coordination between work packages and the first activities required to move from the project’s concept towards implementation.

The Kick-Off Meeting also marked the beginning of close collaboration between partners with complementary expertise across research, technology, materials, sustainability and industry.

Project kick-off and initial coordination form one of ECOPILOT’s first formal milestones, alongside establishing project governance, internal collaboration structures, communication activities and the project’s public online presence.

What comes next for ECOPILOT?

With the project now underway, the consortium will begin building the foundations for the ECOPILOT solution, including stakeholder and policy requirements, the data landscape, system architecture and the development of its first technical components.

Stakeholder involvement will remain important throughout the project. ECOPILOT plans to engage SMEs, industry representatives, researchers, policymakers and other relevant actors through training, workshops, communication activities and opportunities to contribute feedback to the project’s development.

Over the coming months, the ECOPILOT website will share updates on the project’s progress, introduce the partners behind the work and provide insights into the technologies, methodologies, datasets and pilots being developed.

Follow the ECOPILOT journey as we move from data gaps to better design decisions and work towards making sustainability assessment more accessible for Europe’s furniture and mattress industries.
